STUDENTS AND TEACHERS FIND PERSONAL FINANCE CURRICULUM BOTH VITAL AND FUN

After taking a personal finance course, more than 2,000 high school seniors surveyed said that they now spend money more wisely (85 percent) and are now saving or investing their money (81 percent). In the Leander Independent School District of Austin, Texas,  this survey found that when personal finance is taught, students enjoy learning and applying what they are learning.

Teachers from all over the country are finding that not only are students engaged in the material, but they are also taking it outside of the classroom. The curriculum is striking up conversations in the lunchroom and at home. Neena Burnett, Business Technology Instructor at St. George’s Technical High School in Delaware, said, “As an activating strategy, I gave the students an assignment to do at lunch. They were instructed to ask two of their peers, ‘What do you know about saving?’ and ‘Have you ever purchased something that you believed you really needed or wanted, and later realized that it was a waste of money?’  What an engaging discussion we had after lunch. The students also stated that this became a great lunch discussion.”

Teaching personal finance in the classroom is important and necessary to the future success of students. When students take personal finance classes along with their core curriculum, they are set up to become more well-rounded and intelligent individuals. Teachers are also finding that they are learning how to handle their own money more wisely so that they can better teach their students.

Personal finance expert Dave Ramsey is committed to furthering this success by giving students common sense, practical knowledge to help set them up for success through education. Foundations in Personal Finance is a turn-key curriculum that teaches students the basics of money, like saving for emergencies, the difference between debit and credit cards, and student loans.

Through Dave Ramsey’s Foundations in Personal Finance, students are learning valuable, common sense knowledge that will help guide them into sound decision making and adulthood. “The Foundations in Personal Finance DVD's and workbooks have quickly become the highlight of my Economics course,” said Bob Lashley, Economics and Social Sciences teacher at Notre Dame College Prep in Illinois. “The kids love it!  I use the DVD's and workbooks to supplement my teaching of the principles of economics, and the kids always seem to perk up when I discuss personal finance.  Dave's DVD's put a breath of fresh air into my classroom.  Thank you so much for recognizing the importance of bringing the topic of personal finance to our local high schools.”
