Young and Stupid

By Nicole in OR

I was 22 and married (to my ex). We had two working vehicles and short commutes to work. He worked full time, and I was going to school full time and working part time, so we didn't have lots of money. He decided that we "needed" a new car.

So, being young and stupid, I said, "Okay, let's go look." He wanted a new Toyota Camry, but I didn't. He wanted to lease it, so we did.

Then, I went to work out of town and went over the allotted mileage, so I could not turn it in, and I didn't have the extra $9,000 to pay Toyota to take it back.

We bought the car in December of 2000, and I finally paid it off at $300+ per month in October of 2007. I don't even want to do the math! The worst part is, my dad was a car salesman for 18 years and told me to never lease a car, no matter what. He said he would help us find a good used car at a good price, but we didn't take him up on that offer. So, four years after we divorced, I was still paying for a car that I didn't want in the first place.
