Shake Things Up With Milk Shakes!

Guest Post By Martha Thompson

My milk shake creations all start with real ice cream (the more ice cream, the thicker the shake), whole milk, fresh summer fruit and a variety of flavored syrups. I’ve shared two of my favorite milk shake recipes below. Summer’s Best Strawberry Shake and Mocha Shake for you coffee lovers—a great way to enjoy coffee on a hot summer day.

For a fun gathering, consider offering a milk shake bar. Gather all of your ingredients and recipes ahead of time. Then have several others bring along their blenders and favorite summer fruit. The fun begins when everyone creates their own homemade milk shake concoctions! Don’t forget the spoons and straws!

Summer’s Best Strawberry Shake

(Makes 2 servings)

Local experts you can trust.

Find an ELP

1 cup coarsely chopped sweet strawberries (look for strawberries red around stem)
2 heaping cups of strawberry ice cream
¼ cup whole milk
Optional whipped cream and whole strawberries for garnishing

Add strawberries and milk to blender container. Blend until berries are pureed. Add strawberry ice cream; blend until all ingredients are combined. Do not over blend. This will make your shake too thin. Pour into glasses. Garnish with whipped cream and a whole strawberry sliced and placed on rim of each glass.

Note: For a delicious peach milk shake, follow the same recipe but substitute strawberries with juicy summer peaches and strawberry ice cream with vanilla ice cream.

Mocha Shake for Coffee Lovers

(Makes 2 servings)

2–3 tsp. instant espresso coffee powder
3 Tbsp. whole milk
¼ cup chocolate flavored syrup
2 heaping cups of vanilla ice cream
Optional whipped cream and shaved chocolate for garnishing

In a small bowl, combine the espresso powder and milk; stir until espresso powder is dissolved. Add espresso mixture, chocolate syrup and ice cream to blender container. Cover and blend until smooth. Pour into glasses; garnish with whipped cream and sprinkle with shaved chocolate, if desired.
