After more than two decades of marriage, Scott and Lisa had all but given up.
"The marriage had gotten so bad that we were living in different rooms in the house," says Lisa. "We were looking married from the outside, but not behaving like married people."
Years of fighting had worn them down and pushed them apart. Instead of facing their issues head-on, Scott retreated into alcohol and solitude—until a therapist connected him with Celebrate Recovery at Saddleback Church.
"From the day I walked in there, I was home," he says. "It was absolutely the turning point in my life."

He was finally getting the help he needed. But Scott soon realized their finances were still a mess. Up to this point, he was "handling" the money by playing the credit card shuffle game. When he heard about Dave Ramsey’s Financial Peace University, he knew they had to give it a try. He asked Lisa to join him.
"I was a little hesitant when Scott came home and told me about FPU," says Lisa. "But I agreed to move forward with him because we were having success in all of the other issues we were dealing with."
As they went through the class, Lisa experienced her own turning point. When they got to the lesson about Nerds and Free Spirits, she finally understood how important her role was in handling their money.
"I realized I wasn’t just a weirdo and he was the right one. I was the Free Spirit and he was the Nerd—and that was okay. It really opened up the possibility of my participating in the finances," she says.

Their lives, their marriage, and now their money were all being transformed for the better. They even paid off $80,000 in debt! But their son, Aaron, still had his doubts. So they invited him to the Financial Peace University class they were now leading.
"Aaron, at this point, was not a practicing Christian and had a great many doubts about God," says Lisa. "One of the biggest influences over this two-year period of time was watching his father meet God and the influence having God in his life made not only in him, but in our relationship. A year before Aaron was married, he came to Christ. And he started his marriage off knowing what we didn’t."

Scott says going through Financial Peace University and learning how to be wise stewards of their money led to so many other blessings, including a pay increase, a new car and an upcoming cruise.
But nothing compares to the gift they’re celebrating now—their 30th wedding anniversary. At the end of the day, God gave them their marriage back. And that’s worth more than all the money in the world.
