While my wife and I were taking Financial Peace University (FPU), we experienced two emergencies – our washing machine broke down, and our stove's heating element failed.
Because we have an emergency fund, we weathered the washing machine emergency without a second thought (and without reaching for a plastic card). After the stove broke, I kept thinking about the bargain lesson in FPU.
This was the second time in three years that the stove's heating element had failed. We keep good records, so I was able to find the repair invoice from 2006, complete with part number. It took me about 20 minutes to remove the broken element and another 20 minutes to order its replacement online.
Cost to fix stove in 2006: $116.80.
Cost to fix stove in 2009 (post-Ramsey): $43.34.
