A Small Sacrifice That Can Shape Your Child’s Character

2 Minute Read

Breaking news: Raising kids isn’t always easy! But you probably already knew that.

It’s one thing to talk about how to raise kids or to read about it in a book or an article, but it’s a completely different thing when you’re actually in the middle of it, raising kids day in and day out.

Whether you work full time or are a stay-at-home parent, you’ve got a thousand things to do and a thousand places to go, so the thought of stopping to teach your kids a money or life lesson might not seem as important.

There’s a difficult balance between doing everything for your kids—like feeding the dog, cleaning the dishes, picking up toys in their rooms—and letting them do it so that they learn the value of work. Let’s be honest. It’s always easier and quicker to do it yourself, right? At least it feels that way.

When I was 6, my parents gave me the daily chore of feeding our dog. One time I was trying to pour food from a big bag into the bowl, and I spilled it all over the kitchen floor. My mom had to come and help me sweep it all up. I’m sure it took her away from something else she should’ve been doing for at least 10 or 15 minutes.

She had to take the time out of her busy day to clean up my mess! Would it have been easier to just take a minute and feed the dog herself? Of course. But I would have never learned anything in the process.

The point here is to take the time, imagination and effort to teach your kids the life lesson of work. I promise that once they start making a habit of daily chores, it will become part of their character and who they are.

That small sacrifice will be worth it in the long run!

You can read much more about kids and money in my #1 New York Times best-selling book, Smart Money Smart Kids. Along with my dad Dave Ramsey, I’ll equip you with the tools you need to teach your kids everything they need to know about money.
