Leaving a Legacy

Love Your Family Well with the Legacy Box

3 Minute Read

A few months ago, Pamela called into Dave’s show to thank him. Her husband had recently passed away and, because of Dave’s teaching, she would be taken care of. Though her husband’s life insurance policy certainly didn’t remove the pain of losing him, it did ease her worries, allowing Pamela the space she needed to grieve.

Unfortunately, many families aren’t prepared for the inevitable.

Sometimes it’s because a person is young, single and has no dependents. Other times they’re newly married, with hardly a cent to their name. Even couples with multiple kids and assets often skip out on this act of love because it feels overwhelming. Gathering your paperwork and putting your affairs in order can seem like a morbid, unnecessary task.

Dave is on a mission to remind you that the hassle of preparing for your death—unlikely as it may be—is worth your time. Having a plan in place is one of the best ways to say “I love you” to your family. If your legacy begins when you leave, don’t you want it to be as peaceful a transition as possible?

In addition to other topics, compiling a basic estate plan is a big focus of The Legacy Journey. In fact, you’ll graduate from class with a Legacy Box—a wooden box of folders, filed nicely and ready to be put in your designated safe place.

Information stored in the Legacy Box includes:

  • Executive Summary
  • Legacy Letters
  • Birth Certificates, Social Security Cards, Marriage Certificate and Passports
  • Insurance Information (auto, homeowner’s, renter’s, health, long-term care, identity theft protection and life insurance)
  • Estate Plan
  • Power of Attorney Forms
  • Wills and Funeral Instructions
  • Financial Accounts Log
  • Safe Deposit Log
  • Monthly Budget
  • Tax Returns
  • Money Market and Mutual Fund Statements
  • College Funds
  • Retirement Funds
  • Rental Property Summary
  • Car Titles
  • Home Ownership Records
  • Passwords and Combinations

If this seems like a long list, rest assured. Over the course of seven weeks, Dave will walk you through, step by step, how to gather and organize all of the above paperwork into your Legacy Box.

Having these documents in place will secure your family’s future. Make sure you actually have all the insurance policies, plans and official documents you need in place to protect yourself and your family during unexpected life events. Take our 5-minute Coverage Checkup to make sure you have the coverage you need (and none that you don't!).

You can’t afford to skip out on this act of love!
