A collector’s job is very simple: They try to make you afraid, angry or otherwise emotional so you think the world will end if you don’t pay them first. When they threaten to sue, garnish your paycheck, or even have you arrested, it’s all mind games. The reason they act that way is because when you receive your paycheck, a logical person pays the important things first—food, housing, utilities, gas for the car, clothing, etc.
In order to get their money, a collector has to make you think illogically. When you are emotional and want the calls to stop or the threat to go away, you’ll rearrange your priorities and pay the credit card before the mortgage.
The most important thing to do when faced with an angry collector is to protect yourself so you don’t make an emotional decision. Here are some ways to guard your emotions against a collector:
If a collector is yelling, insulting or threatening, it is abuse and you don’t have to take it. If you find yourself starting to get emotional, just hang up. It’s a remarkably simple yet effective strategy. You won’t get in trouble by ending the call.
Keep the conversation calm.
When two people are talking calmly, you can get business done. If you focus on talking at a normal level and brushing off any insults the collector throws at you, the conversation will turn into you being cool and them being crazy. You’ll be amazed at how foolish they sound and how in control you sound.
More than 5 million have beaten debt this way. You can too!
It’s nothing personal.
This may be the hardest emotion to grasp, but it is still important. To the collector, you are a name on a computer screen. They don’t know you, and they’ll forget about you as soon as they hang up. If they call you a deadbeat or a loser, it’s simply to get you to pay. You should not tolerate it, but don’t be fooled into thinking they are judging you. They don’t even know you. It’s all an attempt to get your money.
Above all else, remember that you are in control here. A collector can yell all he or she wants. They will get paid when you have the money.
If you are dealing with an out of control collector Collection Bully can make them stop.
