Back Taxes and Jail for Son?

This caller's son hasn't paid taxes in years?

QUESTION: Paula’s son just told her that he has not paid his income taxes for the past five years.  What can he do to avoid going to jail?

ANSWER: Twenty-six hundred people were incarcerated by the IRS for failure to pay their taxes in 2004.  You have to pay your taxes.  If your son is caught, he will go to jail. He needs to call a CPA today and start the process of what is called “coming in out of the cold.”  If he goes to the IRS, they will work with him.  If they find him, they will send him to jail.
