Ask Dave

Gift Tithing And Gift Taxing

Is a tithe appropriate for Amanda on the money she received from her dad as a gift?

QUESTION: Amanda has received some money from her dad as a gift. Her first instinct was to tithe on that money, but she wants Dave’s input. Is it taxable, and how should she handle this?

ANSWER: There are things that aren’t taxable, but aren’t tithable. A tithe is a tenth of our income given to our church. I usually pay a tithe when it’s taxable. In studying Scripture, I don’t see that you’re instructed to tithe on a gift, but you can’t mess up by doing that. You can’t screw up giving. If you truly felt led to give by the Holy Spirit, then do that.
