Using Backed-Up Tithe Money

Jeremy is thinking about using his tithe money to help his father. Is that all right to do?

QUESTION: Jeremy was in Iraq, and during the time he was there his wife stopped going to their church. They have $4,000 in tithe money saved up and they have not yet selected a new church. His dad just went through shoulder surgery and racked up $3,000 in debt. Is it Biblically right to give that money to his dad?

ANSWER: I don’t think God will be mad at you for helping someone, and it’s certainly not a salvation issue. However, Evangelical teaching says this money should go to your church. If you are going to call this tithe money, then it doesn’t go to a family member, Biblically speaking. But that’s not a Pharisee rule. You just need to approach this with grace.
