QUESTION: Mary quit her job to start her own firm. She is working hard and making good money, but she wants advice on some good books to read in order to organize her business.

ANSWER: Meet with your CPA and learn some basic accounting skills. Make sure you have a good set of books. It’s a huge mistake of start-up businesses, especially start-up businesses that become successful quickly. They don’t stop and count the stuff very well.

Business principles are generally the books I have off the top of my head. In marketing, read everything that Seth Godin has written. Start with Tribes. Malcolm Gladwell has several really good ones, including the latest called Outliers. I would also include Jim Collins. His biggest book is Good to Great. He also wrote How the Mighty Fall and Built to Last. Get Gerber’s E-Myth. I would also include Rich Dad, Poor Dad.
