Time to Start a Business?

Jason is having difficulty finding work. He's thinking about starting his own business. Should he continue searching for a job or work on a small business?

QUESTION: Jason in Oklahoma is having difficulty finding work. He applies for jobs but his background check doesn’t clear because his references don’t return phone calls. He’s thinking about starting his own business. Should he continue searching for a job or work on a small business?

ANSWER: This first thing you do when you put down a reference is to call them and make sure that they are going to be a reference, and a positive one at that. Tell them that if someone calls them, make sure they please call back.

Self-employment is fine, so ask yourself what you love doing. You say you love teaching martial arts, so build a business model around that. Lots of people do well at that. It’s great exercise and good for kids and gives them a lot of self-esteem when it’s done properly.
