Office Location Doesn't Matter Here

Terry and his wife host vendor events. They are considering moving the business out of their home into an office. Is that a wise move, or is it okay to remain a home-based business?

QUESTION: Terry in Colorado and his wife started selling Avon to make some extra money. They then began hosting vendor events. Now they are considering moving the business out of their home into an office in order to appear more professional. Is that a wise move, or is it okay to remain a home-based business?

ANSWER: Most people in a multilevel like Avon are working out of their home, so I don’t think that’s unusual. If you were talking to someone about Avon, I don’t think they’d be put off by the fact that you’re out of your home. If I’m one of the vendors who’s going to buy a table at your vendor event, I don’t give a rip where your office is. I care about the vendor event. I care if I pay $25, will there be three people there or 300 people there? If I’m going to pay $250 for this table space, will there be 3,000 people there, and are those people going to be people who spend money or are they going to be people who just wander through looking for free stuff? I wonder if the event is going to work for me. Whether you have an office or not really doesn’t enter into my decision as a potential customer of yours.

No, if I’m in your shoes, I think I’m going to spend my money, time and trouble making sure these events are highly successful and everyone wants to come back. That way you build more and more and more credibility and testimonials from existing clients. I don’t think where your office is matters at all in this scenario.
