QUESTION: David loves to make art and wants to turn it into a business. He doesn’t really have a marketing plan, which is the point on which Dave starts giving his advice.

ANSWER: Your customers are going to be decorators who work for rich people and rich people. That’s your market. You need to get a buddy who is as good at photography as you are at art to make some pictures of your classic pieces. You have to build a website extraordinaire. That’s your catalog.

Then, you have to go where your customers are and get them to visit the site. You need to go to high-end decorating events, home shows, and furniture mart booths. Think about who you’re after and how you’re going to meet with them. You could even go to architects and let them know what you’re doing to work your art into their plans. You don’t have to be a salesman to sell this stuff.
