Dave explains to Perry that a small business doesn't need an attorney on retainer, but one that's in waiting.
QUESTION: Perry asks if small businesses should have an attorney on retainer. Almost, but not quite, says Dave.
ANSWER: I wouldn’t have one on retainer, but I’d have one in waiting. We have 3 or 4 firms that we use for issues here, but we only pay when we use them. I found specialists in certain areas like trademarking and copywriting. For local and miscellaneous stuff like contracts and litigation, we just found some people through friends who are high-quality attorneys. You can network and ask people at your church who they would recommend. Make sure they don’t start the meter running when you call. They are free to talk to you, but you can pay them when they work.
