Negotiating a Deal

Dave gives Russ some tips on how to negotiate for space to set up his fruit stand.

QUESTION: Russ is about 2-3 years from retirement and wants to know about starting a fruit stand and run his own small business. He wants to know how to negotiate with people who have space where he could set up his stand.

ANSWER: Most of those people with vacant commercial lots won’t want to do a long-term deal. But their lots are not making any money if there’s no one in there. So if you do a short-term lease, and can move at any time if they want to put a McDonald’s or other business up, that’s good for them. But if it were me, go back to the farmer’s market people and renegotiate. I think you can get certification from some of these other fruit growers, and just make yourself their agent.
