QUESTION: Darren on Twitter asks how you negotiate the cost of maternity care when you don’t know how much the health insurance will cover. Dave has a simple answer.
ANSWER: I guess you’d have to find out how much your insurance will cover. If you have a maternity policy, it will cover labor and delivery 100%. If you don’t, it probably will cover none of it. A standard major medical policy that does not have a maternity rider does not cover any of labor and delivery. It only covers complications. You can take your policy and discuss it with your wife’s O.B. and find out what the coverage is going to be and what mess you’re going to get into on the back side of this as far as costs go. Then you can go in and negotiate what portion of it you’ve got to pay down by prepaying it.
