Finding a Used Car

QUESTION: Amanda on Twitter asks where the best place is to buy a used car. Dave gives Amanda some pointers.

ANSWER: Most of us would hit Craigslist and check some local dealers. And you might check a couple of other websites that are out there, but that’s the two go-tos that a lot of people do.

Then, if you’re curious about the reliability and it’s not a car that has been checked out by a dealer, then you can have a good local mechanic give it a once-over before you do the deal. Then that touches on the reliable part of the equation. That’s an important part of the equation.

There are plenty of great used cars out there. Car quality—manufacturer quality, foreign and domestic—is through the roof compared to what it was 30 years ago. These cars that we’re making around the world right now are amazing. They’re just amazing compared to the old days. They’re not perfect. I know you’ve got one that’s broken down. You’re mad at me right now, but get over it. In general, compared to when I was a kid, these cars are amazing.
