Nothing Saved

Once the debt is paid off, Avis will have money to invest in her retirement.

QUESTION: Avis is 42 and hasn’t started on retirement. She has $8,000 in debt and feels like she’s living paycheck-to-paycheck. What should she do to start retirement?

ANSWER: You already know that you have stuff to clean up to be in a position of strength. Get your bills paid off; if you didn’t have those, you have money, and that funds retirement. What keeps you from doing well with your money is an income and an outgo problem. If you get that debt knocked out, you have money to invest.
