Hold Off On Retirement To Save Up For Down Payment?

Shawn is saving for retirement, but saving for a house down payment seems pretty tempting.

QUESTION: Shawn asks if he should stop saving for retirement in order to save for a down payment on a house.  He just graduated from college, has no debt, and has his fully-funded emergency fund.

ANSWER: Yes.  Just make sure you do this in less than 18 – 24 months.  And make sure you save a huge down payment.  It better be worth it if you’re putting retirement savings on hold.
