QUESTION: Ann on Facebook says her husband won’t go to visit family for a family reunion in Illinois next summer unless they’re out of debt. She thinks it’s okay if the trip is to visit family. Who’s right? Dave agrees with her husband and tells Ann there are no vacations while getting out of debt.

ANSWER: No vacations until you’re out of debt would make him right in this case. You guys need to roll up your sleeves and get this done. If you spend a very small amount of money on the travel and work together, it’s a goal that is all right. I don’t mind you doing it, but if traveling to Illinois involves $1,000 worth of plane tickets, you’re staying home.

That’s how you get out of debt. You have to come unglued and get angry at it. You can’t go on with life as usual. By the way, there’s probably another family reunion next year.
