Ask Dave

Should We Take an Anniversary Vacation While on Baby Step 2?

A Twitter listener asks if it's okay to go on a 10-year anniversary honeymoon while working the debt snowball. Dave wouldn't do it.

QUESTION: A Twitter listener asks if it’s okay to go on a 10-year anniversary honeymoon while working the debt snowball. Dave wouldn’t do it.

ANSWER: Probably not. I wouldn’t do it. It’s certainly okay to do—it’s not against the law. If you’re asking if I would do it, or if I would suggest it as part of your debt snowball, I would say no.

A rare exception might be a very small debt snowball with a very large income and a very inexpensive 10-year honeymoon. But that’s probably not what we’re talking about here. We’re probably talking about people with a reasonable income and a large amount of debt who want to go on a cruise to celebrate. I would say no.

You have to stop this. At some point, you can’t go on vacation while you’re in debt. You’ve got plenty of time to honeymoon in the next 10 years. It doesn’t have to be on a certain date. I’m not a big romantic when it comes to people who are deeply in debt. It doesn’t work for me.
