The Best College Thing Going

Kim isn't sure she believes a claim by her co-worker about living expenses at college.

QUESTION: Kim is on Baby Step 2 and her son starts college in the fall. He has scholarships that take care of tuition, but they still need to pay for room and board. Her co-worker says it’s cheaper to live off campus. Is that true?

ANSWER: It’s not cheaper to live off campus. With most in-state colleges, it’s much cheaper to live on campus. He works 20 hours a week lifting boxes at UPS, and they’ll pay for his schooling. Even if UPS doesn’t offer that program, he can work during the summer and pay for school. Work won’t kill him.
