Ask Dave

Letting Her Down

Christopher feels like he's letting his wife down by not making enough money, but Dave thinks it's just that they have a tight budget.

QUESTION: Christopher and his wife were doing their budget and discovered they have more money going out than coming in. He feels like he can’t support her and is letting her down. He makes $1,600 a month and is getting a paper route job until she finishes school. Is that enough?

ANSWER: I don’t think you’re not supporting your wife. What the deal is here is you have a tight budget because you don’t make a lot of money. You’re stepping up to the plate and being accountable. You’re a good man and a hard worker. To make things better, you can either get an extra job to fix things in the short term, as well as aiming toward the place where you want to be in five years, the long term. Find what you want to be and where you want to be in five years. Don’t do it just for money; find what you love to do.
