Ask Dave

Married And Separate Checking Accounts?

Dawn REALLY misses the point of budgeting, with the way she and her husband do it.

QUESTION: Dawn and her husband have separate checking accounts and she wants to know how she should budget for her money and budget his as well.

ANSWER: You’re doing it all wrong.  You’re living like a single mother, paycheck to paycheck in addition to credit cards.  You need to combine your incomes, your checking accounts, and your budget.  You have to sit down together and do the budget.  You have to have shared priorities and goals that you work through together.
