Missing Out

Scott needs to know from Dave how to get into a career that will allow him more time with his kids.

QUESTION: Scott is stuck in a dead-end job. He doesn’t mine the 70-hour weeks, but he’s missing out on his kids’ lives. He wants to change his situation and has only a high school education. What books should he read and how can he improve himself?

ANSWER: You’ve solved a bunch of it by recognizing that you’re a rat in a wheel. You’re stuck and you’re not going up. You don’t want to be doing this 10 years from now. Mechanically, how do you make changes when you are attached to these long hours? You must stick with it for now, but as your supervisor about backing off a little so you can have family time and improve your career and direction.

Ask yourself what you want to do, and create a detailed plan for how you want to get that done in five years. Realize that this will be a process. You may move to something that gives you your life back, along with a little less money, for a short period of time. Read 48 Days to the Work You Love.
