Tithing and Giving While Getting (Out of Debt)
Sarah wants to know if she should continue tithing and giving while getting out of debt.
QUESTION: Sarah wants to know if she should continue tithing and giving while getting out of debt.
ANSWER: If you are tithing, that would refer to you being a Christian or a Jewish person. Those are the only two religions where tithing is taught as a part of our faith. The word literally means “a tenth,” a tenth of your income.
If you are an evangelical Christian, what does the Scripture say? It says to take the tithe off the top before you do anything else. You keep doing it always, not from a legalistic perspective. That’s just God’s instructions on the best way to live. That gives you a baseline of giving and generosity.
Then you go and get your household straightened up before any other generosity, which are called offerings. That is the normal process that Scripture outlines. But don’t go by Boy Scout rules. God loves you and is crazy about you. Just be a big giver. I start with the tithe in mind, though.
