Ask Dave

Tithing or Offering

Dave didn't give a single offering dollar while he was getting out of debt, but he did tithe faithfully.

QUESTION: Cindy asks if she should tithe and do offerings while she’s in debt. Dave explains the difference between the two.

ANSWER: There is almost no time in Scripture that offerings are done from anything except surplus, which implies that you’re out of debt. The only exception is the widow’s mite. I didn’t give a single offering dollar when I was getting out of debt, but I tithed faithfully. I was able to give more after I was out of debt. Unless the Holy Spirit really tells you to give offerings, I wouldn’t.
