QUESTION: Matt in Portland and his wife want to go into the mission field. They own a home, and they have considered keeping the home as a rental property while they’re overseas. It’s worth about $260,000, and they owe $200,000. Dave thinks they need to sell the house.

ANSWER: You don’t have much equity, so if the renter doesn’t pay, this is going to be a drain on your missions work. Newsflash: Renters don’t always pay. You’re counting on this as if it’s like automatic pilot or something, and here you sit somewhere halfway around the world trying to serve the Lord and your walk, and all of a sudden, you’re distracted because you got a $3,000-a-month drain on funds that were given to you to go to the mission field. If I’m supporting you, I’m starting to have a problem paying your rental house fee as one of your supporters. I’d sell the house.
