Wife Died...Do I Owe Her Debt?

Bob isn't sure if he is liable for the credit card debt that is in his late wife's name.

QUESTION: Bob’s wife just died and he found out she had a credit card in her name.  Is he liable for the debt?

ANSWER: You’re not responsible for your deceased wife’s debts unless you signed on her loans.  Her estate, anything she owned, is liable for her debts though.  For example, if you owned a house together, it is part of her estate.  Anything she owned or that you owned together must be used to cover her debts.
