Roth For a Spouse?

The listener's wife can have a fully-funded Roth IRA, even if she doesn't work, with one stipulation though.

QUESTION: A listener says he and his wife have a maxed-out Roth IRA.  Can his wife have a fully-funded Roth as well even if she doesn’t have an earned income?

ANSWER: Yes.  You can have a fully-funded Roth IRA for the spouse who does not have an income.  The spouse that’s working just needs to have an earned income of more than $8,000 annually for you to fully-fund that retirement investment.
