Ask Dave

Investing Savings Bonds

Ashley asks what Dave would suggest she do with savings bonds she's been given over the years.

QUESTION: Ashley asks what Dave would suggest she do with savings bonds she’s been given over the years.

ANSWER: Cash them out now and invest them. They’re earning almost no money. They’re just kind of laying around, in a sense, and people lose them. They forget they have them. I’m not a fan of savings bonds. I don’t have any. I don’t buy them for people. People buy them for us. In the old days, we would just wait until they were mature enough—I think you have to wait, like, six months or something—and then cash them out and put them in a good mutual fund.

That’s what I would do in your case, Ashley. I would put them in a good growth stock mutual fund. That’d be my plan.

Thank you!  Your guide is on its way.
