Ask Dave

Covering Childbirth

If you're childbirth's not covered by health insurance, Dave says you can save up and negotiate to prepay at half the cost.

QUESTION: Justin and his wife are debt free. Their health insurance plans don’t cover childbirth and they want to know how to cover it themselves.

ANSWER: Labor and delivery in most parts of the country can be done for the typical retail value of $6,000 or $7,000. If you save up half the money, they’ll cut the price in half if you prepay in the third trimester. Save up that money in the next six months. Hospitals love that because they will compete for labor and delivery and those feel-good stories.
