Should We Wait to Start a Family?

Holland wants to know if he and his wife should wait until their debt is paid off to have children.

QUESTION: Holland wants to know if he and his wife should wait until their debt is paid off to have children. Dave says he doesn’t allow a financial situation to control family plans unless it’s an extreme.

ANSWER: The only time I tell folks to let their financial situation interfere with whether to have children is if either is an extreme. If you have six kids and you’re trying to go for 20, you probably ought to slow down and get your finances straightened out. If the finances are an extreme situation—you’re sitting in the middle of bankruptcy—you may want to wait a year. Just get yourself on solid ground.

This idea that children will cause you to go broke is simply not true. I wouldn’t worry about it prolonging paying off your debt. It may slow it down a little bit, but not enough that it’s going to potentially change your life. I wouldn’t worry about it at all. Generally, I’m just saying when God wants you to have a kid, have a kid.
