Ask Dave

Keeping Credit Card Statements?

Dave recommends keeping credit card statements for a couple of years, but keeping old settlement letters FOREVER.

QUESTION: A listener asks how long he should keep records of his old credit card statements and receipts.

ANSWER: Keep a couple year’s worth of credit card statements.

Also, make sure you keep any letters and/or receipts from credit card companies in regard to old debts that you settled on for less than the full amount.  Keep these forever – don’t ever throw them away.  You never know when the companies could come back and ask you to prove that you settled or paid off the debt.
