No Help For The Unreasonable

Christina has a stepdaughter starting college this fall. She and her husband want to help with her college costs, but she's chosen a private university at a cost Christina and her husband can't afford.

QUESTION: Christina in San Antonio has a stepdaughter starting college this fall. She and her husband want to help with her college costs, but her stepdaughter has chosen a private university at a cost Christina and her husband can’t afford. Dave says he wouldn’t help her if she’s going to go $250,000 in debt for an education.

ANSWER: I would say, “If you’re going to take my money, you are also going to take my advice. If you are going to go on this track, you will get none of my money.” I’m not going to help her with $8,000 a year if she’s going $250,000 into debt to get an undergrad degree. That’s what’s known as freaking brain damage. There’s not an undergrad degree on the planet that’s worth $250,000 from any university anywhere ever in the history of man. That’s absurd. And somebody needs to say that out loud.

The problem is you have a 17-year-old wagging the dog here, and that ain’t happening at my house. We tell them what to do.
