QUESTION: Sarah in Los Angeles is at a crossroads. She was accepted to medical school, but she has the option to do an M.D./Ph.D. program. She isn’t sure she should pursue that option because it’s an extra four years of school. Dave can’t see why she wouldn’t do it.
ANSWER: Why wouldn’t you do the M.D./Ph.D.? That goes through medical school free. You can probably scratch your living expenses together if you watch what you’re doing. You probably don’t have to assume debt in that scenario. The M.D./Ph.D. program is by far the best deal on the planet to get a medical degree because you get free medical school. Everybody else is coming out with $175,000 in student loan debt. I look at it as indentured servanthood. I think it’s a bargain. Think of it this way. You’re being paid about $80,000 a year. It’s pretty cool. If you’ve gotten accepted, that is the homerun of homeruns. The best of the best. It’s definitely the direction I would go.
