Testing The Career Waters

A listener is applying for another job. Should he tell his current boss that he is looking?

QUESTION: A listener is applying for another job. Should he tell his current boss that he is looking? That depends, as Dave explains.

ANSWER: That’s up to your working situation and if your integrity is in play. Nothing stops you from looking at the menu, even if you’re on a diet. I would treat other people the way I want to be treated.

I don’t expect anyone at my company to tell me every time they apply for another job, but I expect my leaders to let me know if their team members are unhappy working here.

I think it all depends on your relationship to the company and your leadership and how key a person you are. If the company you work for now can move your position from good to ideal, that would be great. But remember the golden rule: Treat others as you want to be treated.
