Ask Dave

Beware Of Generational Business

Does Dave think a small business passed from one generation to another is a bad idea?

QUESTION: RJ and Dave discuss generational business. RJ thinks Dave is against them before speaking with Dave, but not after.

ANSWER: It’s hard to do, and you have to be very intentional with these, because making it work doesn’t just happen. When family and friends work inside the business and are lame, we call that nepotism. It creates a weird circumstance that you have to work against. You have to prove yourself, because nothing will be given to you based on your relationship with the boss. Otherwise, you won’t have earned the right to lead your people in the business.
