QUESTION: Phil in Michigan graduated from college in May. He owes $20,000 in student loans. His sister is getting married in Mexico, and it will cost $2,000 to attend. Should he go?
ANSWER: I think you can do the trip cheaper than that if you really shop your airfare because airfare is going to be the biggest part of that. It’s important to be at your sister’s wedding on one hand, but on the other hand, it’s a little unreasonable for someone to ask an hourly waged farm worker to travel to Mexico for a destination wedding. That’s just plain weird.
In this case, I think your mom and dad should chip in and maybe pay for this trip. I wouldn’t be above asking them to pay part of it because the request is unreasonable. You will probably do it because it’s an important day and you need to be there, but you have a lot of debt and not a lot of income and they’ve dropped this luxury vacation in your lap.
You might tell your dad that you are willing to pay for this, but you’ve got to have a way to make some more money in order to do that. Ask him what you can do to earn some more money and earn your way into this trip.
