Not a Redneck Solution

QUESTION: Keith in St. Louis has a pregnant wife and a 2-year-old. His sister-in-law and her infant also live with them. Their air conditioner is broken and needs to be fixed because of the family situation. It’s going to cost $4,000–7,000. They don’t have the cash now but will in a month. Keith wants to use a temporary fix. What would Dave do?
ANSWER: A new window air conditioner is your solution. Continue to get bids and put in a window air conditioner. You’re exactly right. That’s not redneck. It’s just saying I’m not borrowing money. If you want to downgrade from what might be redneck to what might be more redneck (but neither one really are), you could go get a box fan and just put a fan in the floor.
Definitely go grab a window air conditioner, and if you can find a window air conditioner at some of the box stores, they’re probably on sale. There aren’t many people buying them right now.
We’ll put a pause on the Total Money Makeover debt snowball while you put an air conditioner in your home. I do agree with doing that overall. In the meantime, though, go ahead and get several bids. You may get an education on how heating and air is done during this month.
I’ll volunteer to take the heat for you. You just blame it on me.
