Ask Dave

Not a Debt

If you're caught up on payments, then child support isn't a debt, Dave says.

QUESTION: Mike and his wife are having a budget dispute. She wants to put the child support payments into the debt snowball. He is struggling with telling her that it’s not a debt. Dave helps him out.

ANSWER: It’s NOT a debt. Just the same way you don’t put the electrical bill in the debt snowball. If you had back child support, that would be a debt. But just the monthly bill, you don’t put that in there. In the debt snowball, the debt goes away when it’s paid off. I think you have other issues in this discussion. I think this has more to do with her bitterness toward you guys having to pay child support.
