Tracking Debit Card Transactions?

Dave explains the basics of using a debit card and not a credit card.

QUESTION: Diane is ready to give up her last credit card.  She’s never used a debit card and wants to know how to keep her checkbook register in order using a debit card.

ANSWER: First of all, leave home knowing what’s in the checking account and what you’re going to spend.  A Visa debit card works just like a Visa credit card, except when you get home, you need to enter the receipts of the debit transactions in your checkbook register just as if you’ve written a check.

When you make a purchase, you may have a choice of whether you want to complete the transaction as a debit or credit purchase.  Always choose credit.  This will insure that you are not liable for identity theft.

With your debit card, you can also withdraw cash from an ATM. If you’re going on a spending spree, use cash to avoid overspending.
