QUESTION: Tonya on Twitter wants to know why people get so defensive when she talks about doing a financial plan. Dave says it’s because there are two main emotions around money: guilt and cynicism.
ANSWER: There are two main emotions around money for most people because most people fail with money. The two main emotions are guilt and cynicism. They feel guilty because they suck at handling money, and they know it and they don’t want to talk about it, and/or they’ve been messed over by some money person. There are plenty of money people out there who will mess you over. They got in a deal that went bad. They got in a deal they wish they’d never seen. They got in a deal that wasn’t a deal. So they’re cynical. They think everybody in anything around money is a bad person. Neither one of those is true. They’re emotions. They’re just negative emotions.
There are good people around the money space, and I’m not the only one of them who’s a good person around the money space who can help you with your money. You don’t need to feel guilty about your handling of your money because let me just tell you. If you’ve made mistakes with your money, you know what that makes you? Over 12. Everybody has, including the guy doing this show. As a matter of fact, I made a whole brand out of the mistakes I’ve made.
You just need to understand that sometimes people don’t want to be around somebody who’s trying something new or different or winning. Then there are those people in life, who are known as losers, who just don’t want you to win. They don’t want you to win. They don’t like anybody winning because it reminds them they’re not winning. That’s just not fun for you.
