Old Debt from Bankruptcy?
Paul went bankrupt 17 years ago and forgot to include one credit card bill. Now they're trying to collect the amount PLUS interest.
QUESTION: Paul went bankrupt 17 years ago. He didn’t include an American Express creditor on his bankruptcy. Now a third party is trying to collect the due bill, which is now $7,000. Can they do that?
ANSWER: Most states have a statue-of-limitations on this sort of thing. You're not liable, but it may be worth it to pay something just to get them off your back. My guess is 17 years of interest means the actual debt is about $350. Call them up and offer to settle for that.
