QUESTION: A Twitter listener asks where the best place to look for a good used car is. Dave gives his take.

ANSWER: I’m a fan of a good used car dealer or buying from an individual.

The advantage of buying from a used car dealer is they typically have gone through the car, in most cases a good one, and they know a little bit about the car. The bad part is that if they paid $10,000 for the car and you offer them $8,000, they are not likely to take that loss. What they paid for the car enters into the discussion of how good a deal you get.

The advantage of buying a car from an individual is that, if I have a car sitting in my driveway that I’ve owned for five years, what I paid for the car really won’t enter into the discussion of what I sell it for. It’s in my way and I want it gone. If you stand there and put hundred dollar bills on the hood of that car, you’re going to be buying a car. If you know what the car is worth, take your time and do your research. Know what you are getting price-wise and you will get a deal.
