Should My Adult Child Live at Home to Save Money?

Sue says her son is graduating college this year. He wants to move out, but Sue wants him at home to save money. Dave agrees that he should move out.

QUESTION: Sue in Detroit says her son is graduating college this year as an electrical engineer. She’s been arguing with him about moving out after he graduates. He wants to move out, but Sue wants him at home to save money. Dave agrees that he should move out.

ANSWER: I think he ought to move out. This is not about money. This is about manhood. It’s really going to be emotionally and spiritually good for him to stand on his own. He needs to rent something very inexpensively, and he needs to take his mom’s cue. His mom’s really smart with money. She’s really conservative with money. He needs to learn from her and take her advice on that, but it’ll be really good for his manhood for him to have his own place, for him to be paying his own bills, for him to be standing on his own. If he wanted to date my daughter, I’d prefer him to be in that situation versus living in his mom’s basement saving money. Both are okay, but I love the idea of him having his own dignity. He’s fighting for that. Did you hear him fight for it? Let him win.
