February 6, 2012

Dave talks about his Super Bowl experience in Indianapolis.

Dave explains how to choose mutual funds in a retirement plan.

Kim in Roanoke says her husband left her in July after 21 years of marriage and three kids. Kim got all of the debt and bills, and her husband lost his job in December. Kim can’t pay all of the bills and thinks she may have to file bankruptcy. Dave says Kim needs an attorney today.

Phil in Asheville has a 21-year-old son who received a $40,000 scholarship to go to college. He’s in his fourth year and needs two more years to graduate. Phil and his wife plan to help him, but he’s getting married in August as well. Phil and his wife would like to offer them $10,000 but with strings. Dave gives Phil his thoughts on this gift.

Valerie in Detroit lost her house and thinks she may need to file bankruptcy. She got a 1099 in the mail for the foreclosure. Chase’s collectors want $200 a month from her for a defaulted credit card. Valerie is working for $12 an hour under the table. Dave helps Valerie decide what her necessities are and doesn’t think she’s bankrupt.

Michael in Seattle is a sole proprietor in a service business. Michael has a hard time keeping up with the demands of work and putting out work quickly enough. He took the DISC profile, and he’s trying to figure out a way to talk to his clients about his work style. Dave thinks he’s overpromising and under delivering to his clients.

Dave reads and talks about an article from CNN Money on the House passing a law banning welfare spending at strip clubs.

Chris in Denver has a partnership with someone who owns 10% of the company. It was done on a gentleman’s handshake, and he’s getting resistance at selling the last 10% of the shares. The relationship is now becoming strained. Dave gives Chris some advice on how to handle this mess.

Dave discusses the importance of bringing excellence in the ordinary every day of your life.

Dave reads comments from listeners.

Chris in Oregon has $75,000 in medical bills. His wife had surgery in December and had just started with a new company, which excluded this pre-existing condition. She makes $14 an hour since Chris is unable to work. They’re looking at $30,000 even after negotiating. Dave says they have to get their income up because it’s already hard to eat on her salary.

Jessica in Nashville says her husband works two hours away from home. He gets up at 3 A.M. and gets home at 7 P.M. They have an opportunity to live with Jessica’s parents for a while, which would put them closer to his job. He makes $95,000 a year. They have a fully funded emergency fund. Dave tells Jessica they need to sell the house and move.

Sarah in Las Vegas wants to know what to do about a debt overhang on a residential property. Sarah doesn’t want to walk away from it but doesn’t think she can continue to pay. It’s worth $260,000 and would sell for $160,000. Dave explains how a foreclosure situation works to Sarah and thinks she’s facing a short sale.

Andrew in Detroit has a t-shirt business on the side. He and his wife bring home between $80,000 and $90,000 a year. Andrew is a truck driver with fluctuating paychecks. They don’t know how to budget for all of this irregular income.

Misty in Tulsa and her husband are almost finished with their emergency fund. He is 60, and Misty is 41. They make about $70,000 a year. Their son is in private school. They’re struggling with whether or not to take him out of the school for financial reasons. Dave offers his take.

Autumn on Facebook asks if it’s ever wise to downsize in house to get out of debt more quickly. Dave says it is if you didn’t like your house anyway and were already considering selling it.

Kelly in Houston is currently renting a home but owns a home with a mortgage in another town. It’s draining her, and she’d like to sell the house. The house has a tenant, and she plans to move out in the summer. She needs to raise the rent on it too. What should she do with the house at this point?

Don in Oklahoma City is closing on a home tomorrow. His wife has been threatening divorce for nine months and demanding the check be made out to both of them. She says she won’t sign if this check isn’t signed over to her as well. Dave thinks she’s being a bully, and Dave advises Don to call her bluff.

Kay in Los Angeles is considering bankruptcy. She has $72,000 in credit card debt. She stopped making payments in December and has been on unemployment for the last five months. She could no longer afford the payments. Dave doesn’t think Kay is bankrupt, especially if she returns to work.
