I started the Denise Amber Lee Foundation in June, 2008. It is a non-profit 501 (c) 3 corporation in honor of my wife of just 2 years who was kidnapped, raped, and murdered in January of 2008. Five calls were made to 9-1-1 this day but due to several breakdowns in the local communications center, my wife’s killer was allowed to accomplish his evilness and leave me and our two little boys to ask; why her? The outpouring of love and support from our local community convinced me that I had to do something to give back so Denise’s death would not be in vain. The story has touched people around the world and we have been asked to share our story to help raise public awareness of the inefficiencies and challenges of the current 9-1-1 system. My foundation is insisting that the industry needs a mandatory, uniform training and certification standard for every person that takes a 9-1-1 call from a frantic citizen. We are insisting that technology be developed to pinpoint the location of a cell phone being used to call 9-1-1. Currently, cellphone calls to 9-1-1 cannot be located with pinpoint accuracy. We proposed legislation for a 232 hour training standard for the state of Florida and were instrumental in getting a bill passed and signed by the Governor this year. Our foundation is helping the states of Missouri and Arkansas with proposed legislation this year that will vastly improve the 9-1-1 systems in those states. We are raising funds to help families who have experienced similar tragedies from breakdowns of the 9-1-1 system but didn’t have the enormous backing of the community like I enjoyed. We want to set up trust funds for these families, maybe pay for funerals or help with their debts. Starting a non-profit foundation and trying to raise funds in this economy has been a challenge for a 24 year old, hourly worker at Best Buy. Raising our two young boys alone, ages 6 mo. and 2 years, has not been easy but we have had an impact on the public safety of our communities. I am energized and intensely motivated to do whatever I can to prevent any other family from experiencing the pain and heartbreak that we have suffered. This has been a very expensive journey; both emotionally and financially. I will continue to shoulder the emotional expense, but I need guidance and support financially so that we can continue this vital public safety mission. The 18th century author, Edmund Burke, once said: “The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing”. I have seen the evil in society but I have enough faith in the goodness in society that if they knew of the problems and challenges of our 9-1-1 system and the horrifying consequences of its failures, they would do something about it. I value Dave’s counsel and ask for this scholarship to assure I can continue to make the right decisions for success. Nathan Lee President, Denise Amber Lee Foundation
